Mother's Day
Mere, mutter, maji, madre, makuahine, mom -- however you say “mother,” it means love. The second Sunday of May is the time to celebrate Mom’s love with flowers, gifts, greetings, and most especially, hugs and kisses. Because we all have moms and because this is such a special day, we couldn’t resist learning how Mother’s Day became an official and well-deserved holiday.
The Origin of Mother’s Day
-
The concept of honoring mothers has been around since the ancient Greeks held a special springtime festival for Rhea (mother of the gods) and motherhood. Mother’s Day, however, was not recognized in the United States until centuries later when, in 1912, Anna Jarvis started an annual memorial day for mothers in West Virginia. A year later, nearly every state adopted a more general holiday to honor moms both living and deceased. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed “Mother’s Day” a national holiday to be held on the second Sunday in May.
Mother’s Day Gifts
-
About 90 percent of Americans honor mom with a gift on Mother’s Day. Some of the more traditional Mother’s Day gifts are flowers, candies, and frames for family photos. We found some fun ideas from Lenox to make your gift even more special this year. For instance, why not give mom flowers in a Lenox crystal vase and make a promise to fill the vase with flowers all year long? And because moms love framed pictures of their children or grandchildren, BlueMountain.com lets you customize and print Mother's Day frame mats.
