8 Ways to Show Gratitude

January 18, 2018 by bluemountainecards

01202016_Thank_You_BLG_BMA

As the bleak mid-winter settles in and the last of the lights and tinsel are coming down, it’s a good time to reflect on your holiday fun and the people who made it that way that you’ve still yet to thank. The beginning of the year, in itself, is a good time for us to think about doing things just a little bit better than we have before–like staying in touch more, worrying less, and showing our gratitude.

Saying, “Thank you,” doesn’t always have to be a hand-written note, although one is always appreciated. But we know that sometimes you want to do something different that’s a little more special, so we’ve rounded up some ideas that we feel anyone would appreciate and always remember.

Say it with sweets
ThinkstockPhotos-187957173Who doesn’t like a sweet treat? Bake them their favorite cookies, homemade bread, or buy a bag of their favorite candy or snack. Especially during these wintry months, it’s time for sweet, cozy comforts galore.

Create you own labels
Here’s a fun way to present your candy, doughnuts, or fresh-baked goods. Add a little something extra and attach a creative label. There are lots of cute ideas online like this one from Happiness is Homemade, so find your favorites and give your offering some extra flair with a personal touch.

Do something special for them
ThinkstockPhotos-78813055A great way to show your thanks is to treat them to dinner or a movie they’ve been wanting to see. Now’s the perfect time to catch up on those Oscar contenders, plus it allows you to spend some quality time together and is a fun way to extend your gratitude.

Pay it forward
ThinkstockPhotos-175531936Knowing you contributed to their favorite charity will touch their heart immensely, so donate some funds or volunteer your time in a selfless act of gratitude, and they’ll never forget it.

Be there when they need help
ThinkstockPhotos-481030427Whether it’s lending a kind ear to quietly listen or a hand to hold in a time of grief, be the support they were to you and offer them the same kindness.

Brighten their world with flowers
ThinkstockPhotos-128019789Flowers are a timeless gift that everyone appreciates. If you happen to know their favorite flower, buy them a bouquet or arrangement and include a thank you note. Sometimes, what’s even more special are just a few blooms from your own yard or garden, when the season permits. Find a small glass vase, or even a pretty colored one like blue or pink. You could also use a clear glass vase and add any color food coloring to the water, too, for a fun touch. Then place a few sweet blooms inside. Sometimes the simplest things are the most remembered kindnesses of all.

Give them your time
rbv2_08This is perhaps one the most valuable and underestimated gifts. Do they need help shoveling when it snows? Offer to shovel or bring over your snow blower when the next snowfall hits to clear their property. Lawn or garden work? Give them your helping hands to weed, rake, and clear flowerbeds. Is their car in the shop? Offer to drive them to and from work, the store, or run errands. Are they lonely? Stop by with some warm coffee  and conversation. Time is a gift that’s priceless and always appreciated.

Go digital with your gratitude
Thumb image with the words "You Raise Kindness to an Art"Thank someone on their Facebook wall so everyone knows how wonderful they were to you. You could also send a digital greeting card, which allows you to include your own personal message. We have lots of sweet and fun eCards to choose from, and you even have the option to attach a gift card  for an extra special treat to go along with your greeting. We also have “Simply Thankful – Blue Mountain’s guide to positive living,” which is a wonderful page we created to inspire some thoughtful new ways to help you show gratitude.

Do you have some favorite ideas for how you like to show your appreciation? Please share them with us! We love to hear how the power of gratitude makes the world a more thoughtful, kinder place, and we thank YOU for continuing to keep it thriving and growing.

What to Write in a Thank You Note

April 16, 2015 by bluemountainecards

04122013

“THANK YOU.”  Most everyone says this daily and it feels perfectly natural to say it.
But for special situations, when we want to put our gratitude in print, it’s different and, sometimes, even difficult. So once you’ve got a great card or some nice stationery, what comes next in thanking someone for a gift, an interview, a thoughtful gesture? Perhaps
the tips below can help you write a thank you note that’s not only sincere, but appropriate as well.

Handwritten Thank You Note

First, know that a handwritten thank you note is always appreciated. With email being such a common form of communication, personal notes are more valued than ever. And taking the time to acknowledge someone’s kindness or time will mean the world to them. Simply the fact that you’re writing a note sets you up for success.

Be Timely

Next, try to be timely. A thank you note is best sent within a week. For a large event, like
a shower or wedding, up to three months is acceptable, but “sooner” is preferred than “later.”  If time gets away from you, just offer a humble apology, but don’t dwell on your delay. The note shouldn’t sound like it was a burden to write.

For more formal or business thank yous, such as after an interview, a thank you email can be sent immediately if there is a sense of urgency (say in placing an order or filling a position,) but it should still be followed up with a thank you note or letter sent shortly after the event–within 2 to 3 days. (See links below for more information.)

A few ideas for business thank yous…

  • I’m so happy you recommended our company to one of your friends…many thanks for your thoughtfulness.
  • Or: We were so happy with your____________, we just wanted you to know we’ll recommend you to all our friends.
  • Thank you for the time you spent showing me…
  • Thank you for showing us what “above and beyond” really means…
  • I know your time is valuable, so I just wanted to thank you for making room in your schedule for me.

Be Yourself and Be Specific

Now, just be yourself…but be specific. Address the recipient in the way that’s comfortable for both of you, and then focus on your reason for writing. There’s no need for a long lead-in as you might do in a letter. Let the recipient know right away what you’re thanking them for, and describe it thoughtfully. Saying the gift is incredibly useful, the dinner was delicious, or their act of kindness was enormously helpful are personal touches that mean
a lot.

Add Some Details

Don’t hesitate to add more details to genuinely express your gratitude. For example, if you’ll think of the gift giver whenever you use their present, tell them so. If you felt the dinner guests were a great group of people, let the host know it. If thinking about what someone did still makes you smile, that’s something they’d like to know. Elaborating on the reasons for your gratitude helps people see themselves positively from your point of view—and doubles the joy of the gesture.

End With a Compliment

Finally, finish the note with a sincere compliment that will leave a lasting effect. Whether they’re a one-of-a-kind wonderful friend, an amazing cook, a prospective employer, or you appreciate the time they took out of their busy schedule, now is the time to tell them you noticed—and it will make them feel extra special.

Remember, the thank you note itself, although expected, can often be a pleasant surprise. And everyone wants to feel appreciated. So, the few minutes you take to tell someone you’re thankful could brighten their whole day…and yours!

A few ideas for social thank yous…

  • You always know the perfect thing to (do, say, give, etc.)
  • Your kindess during a difficult time was sincerely appreciated.
  • I feel doubly blessed…first for what you did, but mostly, for what
    you mean to me.

What to Write in a Thank You Card

March 12, 2015 by bluemountainecards

We recently gave some advice on how to write a Thank You Note, and now we’re here with suggestions on what to write inside a Thank You card or eCard. You might be saying, “What’s the difference?” Although not vastly different, there are some points to take into consideration. You may want to write a bit more inside a Thank You card because there’s simply more room. Perhaps you’d like to be a bit more serious in a card… Read on for more tips and advice when writing a Thank You card.

Reflect on the person and situation you want to address. Is this someone you feel especially close to? Is the thank you for a gift or is this about a person’s generosity or thoughtfulness? If it’s the latter, remind them of how often you notice their generous spirit or willingness to do kind things.

Think about what the thank you is for. If for a gift, is it clear to you that they took time to choose it? Was their gift a reminder that you’re special to them? Is this for something nice they did for you or someone you care about? When you start answering some of these questions, it will help you develop some ideas of what to say.

Address them in a warm and personal way, thanking them for the specific gift or special thing they did. If they’re someone close to you, you can mention that you’re thankful for the gift, etc., but more than that, you’re thankful for their friendship, which you cherish all year through.

Let them know what the gift means to you. Did you eat the cookies they gave you right away or share them with your family? Did you wear the new scarf to work and everyone commented on it? Did their hospitality allow you to truly relax and enjoy yourself? Let them know that this gift has meaning for you.

You can then finish your note with a comment on how their gift or thoughtfulness makes you smile each time you think about it or let them know it added special meaning to your day.

The most important thing to remember is to be sincere…and to be yourself. Whether you go the traditional route or if funny is your thing, your appreciation will show through no matter which words you choose. So relax, and remember, too, that your note of thanks will start the year off right for both of you!

Finally, here are a few more idea starters that work well for many occasions:

  • Simply grateful for special people like you.
  • Your help was such a blessing.
  • Thankful, appreciative, grateful…that’s me because of you.
  • Thanks for all your special (caring) ways.
  • So lucky, so happy, so grateful for you.
  • Thank you for taking the time to be so thoughtful.
  • Could you have been any nicer? Don’t see how!
  • Thanks for thinking of me in such a special way.
  • Thanks…it was wonderful…just like you!
  • You’re a real sunshine-bringer!
  • You totally “out-niced” yourself!

Gratitude Guide for Mom

May 12, 2014 by bluemountainecards

05062014_mom_WTW_BLG_BMA

Happy Mother’s Day – Those three little words are loaded with so much meaning that there’s no possible way to fit all the things that make up those words into a single day. Yet, we try our best to give tokens of love to our moms with the hope that even just an ounce of what we feel is communicated to them.

So, how do you begin to show your gratitude for all she’s done and continues to do? We’ve compiled a Gratitude Guide with some ideas and inspiration to help you. Keep in mind that, when it comes down to it, most mothers would agree that your time is more wanted than things; your validation of who they are, more precious than gold…

List of Gratitudes
A daughter wrote a letter to her 80 year old mother, telling her how thankful she was for all the things her mother did for her while she was growing up. Her mother said it was the best Mother’s Day gift she ever received, and wants it to be included in her eulogy. Click Hereto read Faye’s letter to her mother…and maybe grab a tissue. If you would like to do something like this, you can use our Blue Mountain printable stationery as a beautiful backdrop for this gift she’ll cherish.

Sing it
Do you have musical talent? Write your mom a song and sing it to her, or record it for her so she can listen to it over and over again.

Dedicate a song on the radio
If singing isn’t your thing, call up her favorite radio station and see if they’ll dedicate a song to her at a time she’s probably listening.

A box of 52 of your favorite memories about your mom
Find or make or your own decorative box and write down 52 of your best-loved memories about your mom. She’ll get to read one each week over the next year.

Garden walk treasures
Go on a garden walk with Mom and collect leaves, petals, and anything that catches your eye. Back at Mom’s house, create a window display of your treasures reminding her of your enjoyable afternoon together.

Record a personalized ringtone for her cell phone.
Give her a heart a tug every time her cell phone rings. Record a special ringtone of all the kids/grandkids yelling, ‘We love you Mom/Grandma!”

Jewelry with meaning
Give her vintage map jewelry of the state/country where you grew up, her favorite bible verse, or a much-loved passage from a favorite book
or poem.

A Now and Then Photo
Frame a photo of you and Mom from when you were still a baby and she was a young mom, and one of the two of you now.

Take a class together.
If you live close to your mother, take a class together of something she always wanted to do like sewing, painting, cooking, etc. Not only will it be a fun experience, but the time spent together is priceless.

Mother’s Day Photo Magnet
All moms have them—photos covering the refrigerator of all their children and grandchildren. This is a wonderful idea that can turn a photo of each person she loves into a magnet itself. You can make one of every child and grandchild. Once you’ve made the magnets, post them to her refrigerator with notes from each person on the magnet about what they love about her so she’s reminded every single day what an amazing woman she is and how she’s touched their lives.

Make a recurring appointment for a phone call with Mom each week. Plus, if you have siblings, assign each one a different day of the week to call Mom so she hears from her children regularly.

Tell Mom what you learned from her example.
This popular poem by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan is a wonderful way to honor mom and has been shared in many forms time and time again.

One of our Blue Mountain editors has created a Pinterest Board for many of the ideas you’ve read about in our blog today, and we also invite you to use our Mother’s Day eCards to help celebrate your wonderful moms.

All of us at Blue Mountain wish you and your mom a Mother’s Day to remember!
