“In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and – SNAP – the job’s a game!” For many of us, the character of Mary Poppins, so delightfully played by a young Julie Andrews, made us want to “find the fun” in anything we had to do. Julie Andrews’ work in film, stage, and television appeared to the rest of us, it seems, to be a consistent way for this incredible entertainer to share the fun with us.
As an Academy Award winning actress, a singer and Broadway star, Julie Andrews has captured the hearts of audiences for nearly sixty years and she’s still going strong. Andrews debuted on Broadway in 1954 and in Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins just ten years later. Her box office successes also included The Americanization of Emily, Torn Curtain and The Sound of Music, for which she is probably most well known. More recently, she starred in The Princess Diaries and has offered her voice talents to the Shrek movies and Despicable Me as well.
By 1966, Julie Andrews had starred in six hit films. She married film director, Blake Edwards in 1969 and celebrated 41 anniversaries with him until his death in 2010. Together they raised five children as
a blended family.
In a career that has spanned over six decades, Julie Andrews has motivated and inspired us to value our roles in life, to reinvent ourselves when times call for us to change, and to be willing to seek the best in what life has to offer.
In 2000, Queen Elizabeth II made Julie Andrews a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her service to the performing arts. Dame Julie Elizabeth Andrews, born in England on the first of October in 1935 with a crystal clear, incredibly beautiful voice, has helped us hear, “The Sound of Music” wherever we go.
Happy Birthday Julie Andrews and we thank you for sharing your gifts with all of us. We celebrate you with love on your birthday!
