About Gandhi
Born Ocober 2, 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was raised in the state of Gujarat in Western India. He studied law in London and joined the bar in 1891. Gandhi dedicated his life to the principle of satyagraha (literally meaning "truth force"), which was his idea of direct social action through courage, non-violence, and truth.       He has been called "Father of the Nation" in India, and many called him "Mathatma" which means "great soul." He fought and led many causes, all with non-violent protest and passive resistance.      Some of his great accomplishments include: improving the rights of the immigrant Indians in South Africa, leading the struggle in gaining independence from Britain, and continually trying to help relations between the Hindu and Muslims.      He often fasted to the point of death, as a form of protest, to show his country and compatriots how dedicated he was to his cause.      He was assassinated in January of 1948 at the age of 79.
