On the Eve of St Nicholas Day, it is a custom in some countries for children to leave straw and carrots in their shoes for St Nicholas' horse. St Nicholas (or Sinterklaas) comes to their house while they are sleeping, and if they've been good, he leaves candy and treats in place of the straw.
