Gray Wolf Canis lupus The distinctive howl of a wolf can be heard by a human ear from several miles away. Gray wolves, also known as timber or black wolves, were originally one of the world's most widely distributed mammals, living throughout much of the northern hemisphere. Today, wolves are endangered in many areas, including the lower 48 states except Minnesota. World Wildlife Fund has worked for many years on a U.S.- Canadian project involving wolves' habitat modeling and conservation needs determinations in the Rocky Mountains.

Dolphins Dolphins are among the most intelligent, elegant, and captivating mammals on earth. The bonds between mother dolphins and their calves are very strong, close, and beautiful. Stories have been told of how a mother dolphin, in a highly agitated state, will try to revive her dead calf for hours. Other stories tell how a mother and child, separated by thunderstorms, will find each other days later and have a loving reunion. A mother and calf may swim together, side by side, for many years. Calves might eventually leave their mothers but will probably stay in touch for the rest of their lives. Young dolphins also form lifelong bonds with other members of mother calf groups and are given lifelong protection. Sometimes a group of mother dolphins will form a half-circle playpen where their "children" can safely play. Dolphins will often "babysit" for one another.

Bald Eagle Haliaeetus leucocephalus Soar Like an Eagle The bald eagle may look bald from afar, but in reality it really is not bald at all. The eagle has white feathers on its head, neck and tail. "Bald" in this sense is actually a derivation of the Old English word "balde" which means white. So, our eagle was actually named for having white feathers instead of not having feathers! An American success story, bald eagles have been removed from the endangered species list. They are now considered threatened. Bald eagles build their nests in very tall and old trees, and their nest can weigh 1,000 pounds or more and measure ten feet across. World Wildlife Fund works to protect old growth forests inhabited by bald eagles, policies surrounding the endangered species act, and to reduce toxins and pesticides that greatly affect the reproductive activities of bald eagles.

Manatee Trichechus manatus The West Indian manatee inhabits the warm coastal waters of Florida and the Caribbean Sea. Boat traffic and coastal development threaten the feeding and breeding grounds of this mammal. World Wildlife Fund is a member of the Everglades Coalition and has been instrumental in securing nearly $1 billion in federal funds for restoring the Everglades, one of the manatee's most important habitats.

Chimpanzee Pan troglodytes Chimpanzees communicate in many ways, including facial expressions, vocalizations, posture, touch and movement. World Wildlife Fund (WWF) developed a program at the Outaba-Kilimi National Park in Sierra Leone, West Africa to safeguard the chimpanzee in the wild. This is Sierra Leone's first fully protected wilderness area. WWF also works to stop illegal traffic in endangered animals and plants.

Card Message
Tiger Panthera Tigris Scientists speculate that a tiger roars to announce its presence to other tigers. At the turn of the century as many as 100,000 tigers, including eight subspecies, may have roamed throughout Asia and parts of Russia. Since that time, the population has shrunk by an estimated 95 percent, with probably fewer than 6,000 tigers left in the wild today. Six subspecies are either extinct or critically at risk, and all are endangered. World Wildlife Fund's (WWF's) successful global tiger strategy is to focus efforts and investments where they can yield the greatest dividends in conserving tigers and their habitats. For example, in Nepal WWF is supporting antipoaching units, training law enforcement personnel, helping create intelligence networks, undertaking public awareness campaigns, working with the government on ecotourism initiatives benefiting tiger conservation, and working with local communities to restore tiger habitat. Since these efforts began, tigers have moved into regenerated habitats and populations have increased.
