Big Game Recipes!

Big Game Recipes!

The big game is right around the corner, and whether you’re hosting a party for 5 or 50, having great food on hand is always a good call. Chili, check. Wings, check. Yummy dessert, check. Here are some of our favorite ideas that will keep everyone full and happy no matter who wins!

It’s all about appetizers: When everyone is gathered together it’s time to start serving the snacks! Appetizers are great because you can do so many different varieties, and fans will love finger-friendly food they can eat in front of the big screen!

Winning Wings: Let’s face it – it just wouldn’t be the big game without some buffalo wings! Stick to one kind, or pump it up a notch and make a wing bar with all different kinds – from buffalo to bbq, baked to Asian and everything in between!

Chili: There’s nothing better on a cold football Sunday than a hot steaming bowl of chili! One great idea we love is setting up a few different crock pots and having a variety of chili to choose from. From hot and spicy, to black bean and mild – you can even try a turkey or vegetarian chili!

Bring on the Sweets: Your guests will probably be craving something sweet to sink their teeth into after all the spicy and savory courses throughout the day. Having a few options on hand is always a good idea – from chocolate to peanut butter to caramel - satisfying the sweet tooth should be a breeze!

Happy Birthday Edgar Allan Poe!

Happy Birthday Edgar Allan Poe!Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts, to traveling actors David Poe and Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins.

Separated from his older brother, William Henry, and younger sister, Rosalie, following their parents’ deaths, Edgar went to live with wealthy tobacco merchant, John Allan, and his wife, Frances Valentine Allan, inRichmond,Virginia.  Although John planned for Edgar to pursue a career in business, Poe desired to follow in the footsteps of his childhood hero, British poet Lord Byron.  Prolific as his literary efforts were, Poe was dissuaded from publishing by his boarding school headmaster, even with enough poetry to fill a book by the age of thirteen.

Poe led a complicated life as a young man, experiencing one hardship after another.  Attending the University of Virginia in 1826, he was forced to leave due to gambling debts acquired while trying to sustain himself, since John Allan had given Poe only a fraction of the stipend necessary to live.  Returning home, Poe’s fiancé, Elmira Royster, had become engaged to another during Poe’s time away at school.  The combined stress from Allan and Royster compelled Poe to seek out a new life, resulting in enlistment in the U.S. Army, and later at West PointAcademyafter making amends with Allan.  During this time, Poe published his first book, Tamerlane, as well as a collection of poetry.

As many classic works were published (“The Raven” in 1845) and Poe gained notoriety, he sought more payment as lecture crowds increased.  An advocate of author’s wages and international copyright law, Poe attempted to establish his own literary journal, but was unable to acquire the financing.

His health deteriorated in the late 1840s, and Poe was hospitalized after being found in a bar room.  He died on October 7, 1849, at forty from an undetermined cause of death.

Seeking revenge for a scathing review by Poe, author Rufus Griswold wrote a defamatory obituary of him, followed by an unflattering biography filled with exaggerations of drinking and womanizing.  Griswold’s attempts misfired, prompting the public to seek out Poe’s work in droves.

The dark and melancholic aura associated with Poe was more the mystique created by his rivals.  Poe may have been a man presumed to have lived a licentious lifestyle, but any darkness attributed to him was committed to his work.  The man himself appears nobler than credited, and sought refuge in his talents, becoming the literary giant he is known as today.

Your January Birthday – Beautiful Dreamer!

Your January Birthday Beautiful Dreamer!

If you celebrate a birthday in January, you’re in good company.  Ben Franklin, Mozart, Elvis, and Oprah all share your birthday month.  January may be the month of new beginnings and setting new goals, but it also celebrates dreamers, those who may not know how they’ll get to their goal, but know they will.

You’re always in the pink because your birthstone is a garnet and garnets come in a wide variety of pink and red colors.  They symbolize strength, prosperity, health and perseverance.  If a friend gives you a garnet, in part it’s to wish you safe travels and protection.  If a loved one gives you a garnet, it’s to remind you that they want those safe travels to bring you back home as soon as possible.  Since the garnet was originally named for those tiny grains or seeds found inside a pomegranate, they also symbolize the seeds of growth and joy in a relationship.

Your birthday flower is the carnation, the symbol of pride and beauty, love and distinction and a fascination with all that life is about.  You’re a person who embraces life, goes after your dreams, and seeks the road less travelled and your friends love this about you.  The carnation, like the garnet, brings added strength, protection and healing.  White carnations are offered between friends, pink ones for those in the flirtatious stages of young love, and red carnations for those who’ve found their match for a lifetime.

So, as you start the New Year, just know that the world sees you as a beautiful dreamer, a gift to be cherished and a treasure to be around.  Celebrate all that it means to be uniquely you.  You’ve been born in the same months as other strong and unique people like Paul Revere, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.and Joan of Arc.  Hold your head up high, celebrate being delightful you, and have a great birthday!
